Grunz & Gemperle

The German-Swiss artist duo started working together on art projects in 2008. After their first exhibition in 2010 (Mondejar Gallery, Zürich), Grunz and Gemperle continued exploring the field of art and photography. Fascinated by the possibilities when combining photographs with various materials and technics to create unique art objects. This special process that they invented is what they call OVERPOWERED PHOTOGRAPHY.

Always inspired by beauty, for them it was the perfect medium to express their diverse interests and ideas in a creative process. The artist duo sees themselves as modern story tellers. Sometimes with a winking eye or an ironic sense of humor, they choose from socio-critical topics to pop culture and everything in between. Grunz & Gemperle work is easily recognizable on its vibrant colors, eye-catching strong images which are very sexy but always with style.

To begin with there are a series of photographs according the chosen topic where their professions as stylist, make-up artist (Grunz) and photographer (Gemperle) completely pay off. After carefully selecting and extensive editing the images are printed on various materials and further „overpowered“ by up to five layers of different mediums and objects, bringing the original photograph to a totally new level.

Although often highly polished their work is meaningful, fun and lures to stop and look beneath the glossy surface. To explore a certain ambiguity.

Julia Grunz

Obsessed with coloures and a good sense of humor Julias work is stylish, glossy, sexy with a touch of irony. She has a diverse background as a stylist and make-up artist and lived several years in New York and London working in media, advertising and for numerous fashion magazines. Today her home base is Switzerland where she works with Andreas on their art projects and exhibits them internationally in places like London, Zürich, Mykonos (Greece).

Andreas Gemperle 

Continuously and persistently looking for new challanges and forms of expression, Gemperles mission is to always bring beauty to images and to people. In relation to his wide range of interests he is a matchless allrounder and at the same time a positive perfectionist mixing medias like photography, video and all kind of objects and materials. After university Gemperle soon followed his passion creating images and new realities, became quickly a professional and never stopped for the last 20+ years. After some successful exhibitions and working for various magazines worldwide he now focuses on Overpowered Photography and the Grunz-Gemperle collaboration. Creation is freedom!

Andreas Gemperle works and lives in Winterthur, Switzerland with his wife and two daughters.
